Tidal Waves of the Year

Sarah Lindamood- We are so proud to call Sarah our female Tidal Wave of the Year. She comes to practice every day with a smile on her face, ready to work hard. Without fail, Sarah finds the coaches after practice to thank them for working with her. Sarah showed such dedication, determination and team spirit all season long. Sarah’s nails are often painted blue and green, and you can always find her cheering for all of her teammates at swim meets. She is truly one of the sweetest, kindest Tidal Waves we’ve ever coached. We were so proud when Sarah made Champs at Meet 5, her last meet of the season. Sarah, you are an asset to our team. Congratulations!!

Cameron Von Kannewurff- There was no doubt in our mind when we chose Cameron as our male Tidal Wave of the year. All season long, Cameron has set many goals for himself and has never given up, no matter how difficult the task may be. Cameron was willing to do whatever it took to get faster and score points for the team. Cameron came to every practice, asked for extra private lessons and kept track of his best times closely. We admire Cameron’s goal-oriented mindset and are so impressed by how he dedicates himself to achieving those goals. Congratulations, Cameron!!

Swimmers of the Week

Charlotte Nasworthy, Age 13
This year Charlotte turned 13, making the jump from swimming 50’s of each stroke in meets to now swimming 100’s of each stroke (that includes a 100 butterfly!). Charlotte never complains- she does what’s asked of her with a positive attitude and a smile. However, when Coach Sara told Charlotte that she would be swimming her first 100 butterfly in the meet against Hungary Creek, she wasn’t sure what Charlotte’s reaction would be. Charlotte’s eyes widened for a second, but then she smiled sweetly and said “Okay!”. Charlotte swam a beautiful 100 butterfly, placing 6th against girls who had swam the event many times before. After a grueling race, she climbed out and hugged her proud Dad. Charlotte, we are lucky to have you as a Tidal Wave! Congratulations!!

Taylor McDermott, Age 6

This is Taylor’s first year as a Tidal Wave and the coaches have enjoyed watching him get faster this season.   Taylor has quickly become one of our most valuable 6 and under swimmers.   Over the course of the season, he has dropped 2 seconds in his 25 freestyle and 4 seconds in his 25 backstroke.   Taylor is one of our few 6 and Under boys who courageously swims the 50 freestyle.   You can catch him in the event this week at our meet at the Dominion Club.   He is 7 tenths of a second away from going under 1:00 and we know he can do it!   Taylor works so hard in

Carson Elliott, Age 7
Day after day Carson comes to practice ready to work hard and improve. This past week Carson proved that hard work does pay off. After clocking in a JV backstroke time of 26.94, Carson climbed out of the pool amazed. The coaches, however, were not surprised at all. After weeks of practice, Carson has proved that he can hang with his big brother Cade. Congratulations to Carson for this great accomplishment and watch out Cade!

Mary Cornett, Age 9
It is not always easy to make the jump from the 8 and under to the 9-10 division. Mary Cornett has always strived for greatness in the pool and that is just what she achieved in week three. Mary managed to shock the coaches with an advanced time in breastroke of 54.50 and a JV time of 50.60 in 50 butterfly. Congratulations to Mary Cornett on her achievements. Keep your eye out for Mary this week

All Tidal Waves Novice Team Volunteers, Ages 13-18

For the past two Saturday mornings, these teenagers have woken up before 8am (gasp!) to come help the coaches run our Novice Team Meets. They show up ready to help out at any job. We couldn’t have these meets if it weren’t for them. They are our timers, runners, set-up crew, coaches, clean-up crew, results compilers, ribbon labelers and cheerleaders for our youngest Tidal Waves. Many of them often come help coach bright and early at our 8:00am swim practice. We are so grateful to have such wonderful Senior Swimmers. At the Church Run meet, we called on our Senior swimmers to be “relay parents” for our mite relays. These Seniors helped our Mites get ready for their relays and stayed to cheer them on during the race. Parents and coaches complimented the Seniors on how well they work with our younger swimmers. We are so proud of these swimmers and are so thankful to have them on our team. We have the best Seniors in the league! THANK YOU ALL!!! If you see these kids, please thank them for all of their hard work!

Jack Crosby, Age 12

Jack has been a Tidal Wave for many years and we’ve enjoyed getting to know him and watching him improve over the last few years. This past weekend, the coaches used one of their “Coach’s Recommendation” spots on Jack for our Starts and Turns clinic. We wanted to help Jack improve his dive and have faster flip turns. Coach Sara worked with Jack and Russell Parietti (9) on flip turns during part of the clinic. After a few tries, Russell mastered the flip turn while Jack patiently waited for his turn. After Russell completed his very first flipturn and swam past Jack, Jack flashed him a big thumbs up and said “Good Job, Russell”. Coach Sara was so impressed by Jack’s supportive attitude. Jack is always there for his teammates and he shows up for practice every day. The coaches love working with Jack because he listens so carefully and works hard to improve. Thanks for being such a great teammate, Jack! Congratulations on being our Swimmer of the Week!

Jackson Shewmake, Age 10
Jackson is in his first year as a member of the Tidal Waves. Jackson is new to the sport of swimming and he comes to practice everyday, ready to learn. Each week the coaches have worked with Jackson to improve his freestyle and backstroke. We have always been impressed by his work ethic, but we were blown away when we watched him swim at our first meet last week. Jackson looked fantastic in the water, finishing near the top of every heat he swam in. The coaches shared a discussion about how awesome he looked in his races and decided that we should warn the rest of the team to look out for Jackson! He’s competitive and he’s improving quickly—look for Jackson in our next meet vs. Church Run. Congratulations, Jackson!!
Sophia Palumbo, Age 7
Sophia, or OsOs as the coaches call her, was so close to making Champs last year. Less than 1 second away in her 25 backstroke! The coaches watched closely each week, hoping that she could crack that JV time. It didn’t happen though, so she proudly went on to Champs anyways to support her sister Julia. The Palumbo's are getting ready to move to Ohio in just a few weeks, so OsOs came to last week’s meet ready to have fun and be with her friends. She swam a beautiful 25 backstroke in 26.42—a new JV time!! “But they’ll be in Ohio by Champs weekend….” the coaches thought to themselves. Then, we heard the FANTASTIC news from Mrs. P— the Palumbo’s have decided to come back to Virginia for Champs in July! Sophia will get to swim her last race as a Tidal Wave under the bright lights and big stage at CHAMPS. Congratulations, Sophia!!!!
Laura Whisler, Age 16
Laura Whisler is one of our awesome Senior swimmers and we are proud to make her our swimmer of the week! She has been a member of our team for several years and she attends every practice and meet. She is sweet, funny and the coaches love to joke around with her. She is always supportive of her teammates and makes new Tidal Waves feel welcome at practice. Laura never complains and she always provides good comic relief during a tough practice. Laura came to practice every single day last week, proving her dedication to the team. She’s volunteered to help out with coaching the Novice Team and Junior Team and the coaches always know that we can rely on her. She works hard in practice and we know she’s going to have a great season!

Liam Arnason, Age 6
Liam is new to our team this year and we are excited to have him! He is a member of our Novice Team and is doing a great job preparing for his first Novice Team meet on June 19. We are so proud of how much Liam has improved during the past few weeks of practice. No matter how hot it is outside, or how crowded is lane is, Liam is always ready to listen and learn from his coaches
Annie Edwards, Age 9
Annie has been a proud member of the Tidal Waves for several years. Annie is a fantastic listener and is always ready to try new things. She is working hard on her dives, and with her strong determination we know they will be perfect soon! Since Annie recently turned 9 years old, this is the first year she will swim 50s of each event and the coaches know she’ll do great job. Annie always tells us that the most important thing to do in swimming is to try your best—and she is absolutely right! You will often see Annie standing with the coaches at the 13-18 practice pushing her big brothers to work harder! We love Annie’s bright smile and positive attitude and we know she is going to have another great season with the Tidal Waves. Congratulations Annie!!
Joshua Almany, Age 6
Joshua is a member of our Novice Team and we are excited to watch him improve. Joshua comes to practice every day and can be seen working hard on perfecting his freestyle and backstroke. Joshua is a quiet leader; he always listens carefully to his coaches and follows all directions. His strokes have already improved in just two short weeks! We can’t wait to watch Joshua’s freestyle and backstroke times drop this season—with all of his hard work, the coaches expect that his times will get better and better each week. Joshua has learned a lot from his big sister Amanda, who is another valuable member of our team. Look out for Joshua in the first Novice Team meet on June 19!
Mary Kate Richards, Age 6
Mary Kate is a member of our Novice Team. She comes to practice regularly with a big smile on her face, ready to work hard. She listens to all of her coaches and has improved already. Mary Kate’s personality always brightens our day and we love to see her goofing around at the pool with her big brother, Russell. Mary Kate has learned backstroke quickly and is now working on perfecting her freestyle. Look out for Mary Kate at our first Novice Team meet. Keep up the great work Mary Kate!
Michael Chandler, Age 13
Michael is a new member of the Tidal Waves and we are excited to get to know him this year. Michael has come to many practices already and has shown us that he’s excited to learn more about swimming. The coaches have spent a lot of time working with Michael already, and we are so impressed with his work ethic. He learns new strokes quickly and is always willing to try a new technique or drill. We can already tell that Michael is going to be an asset to our team and we are excited to have him this summer. Congratulations, Michael!!
