Novice Swim Team
The Wyndham Tidal Waves Novice Team offers young swimmers a unique opportunity for stroke development and meet experience. The Novices work with our team coaches at their own practice sessions and their own Saturday morning swim meets. By designing meets specifically for these swimmers, we hope to create an encouraging environment in which Novice Team participants compete with other swimmers of similar age and ability. We want them to experience the excitement of their first swim meets in an atmosphere that is not overwhelming. Novice Team meets are organized like regular team meets so these swimmers have every opportunity to cheer for their friends and see their times and strokes improve throughout the season. The Novice Team is
designed to prepare these swimmers to join our competitive team the following year.
Novice Team Placement
All new swimmers ages 8 and under will be evaluated by the coaches at the Dive-In Party at NOVA on May 23rd.
At the evaluation, each child will be asked to swim 1 length of freestyle and 1 length of backstroke. The following are the requirements for placement on the Novice Team:
Must swim one length of freestyle with no assistance; rotary (side to side) breathing not necessary
Must swim one length of backstroke with no assistance
Independently kick on back for one length
Independently kick on kickboard for one length
If a child exceeds these expectations, they will be placed on our regular team and compete at our six regular season meets. The coaches will contact the parents by email to let them know their child's team placement by Friday, May 28th. Novice Team Meets & Practices
Novice Team members will attend their scheduled practice time and compete in our 3 Saturday morning meets.
It is our goal to prepare swimmers for GRAL competition.
If the coaches feel a swimmer is ready to compete in a Wednesday night GRAL swim meet, the child may be moved up on a case-by-case basis.
